How To Care For Your Teeth During Holidays

The last thing you want during the holiday season is an unexpected dental emergency. While we love seeing you, we don’t want that for you either! Therefore, we put together this guide to help you care for your teeth during this busy time so that you don’t come back in the new year with cavities or worse. Here are four tips to help you care for your smile this holiday season:

Get Your Teeth Cleaned, Then Go Shopping

The holidays are a busy time, but don’t let that keep you from your scheduled dentist appointment. You can even make a day of it by attending your dentist appointment in the morning and doing some Christmas shopping in the afternoon.

Limit the Coffee, Drink Water Instead

Hey, we get it! While this is the most wonderful time of the year, it can also be the most exhausting. Many of us find ourselves reaching for more than our normal share of coffee. Try to limit the number of sodas and coffee you drink during the day, and bring your favorite water bottle with you instead.

Have Your Sweets Directly After Mealtime

Candy and sweets are everywhere, especially during the holiday season. We’re not saying that you have to eliminate them completely, just be mindful of when you’re eating. Did you know that when you eat meals your saliva production increases? This helps cancel out “acids produced by bacteria in your mouth,” so if you choose to eat any sweets, do so right after mealtime to help wash out those acids.

Stick to Your Dental Hygiene Routine

While it may seem redundant to mention, sticking to your dental hygiene routine during the holiday season can be a tad difficult. Perhaps you’re drinking hot chocolate closer to bedtime, or waking up earlier than usual to get in that 15 minutes of “me” time before the kids wake up. Just make sure you’re brushing twice a day for at least two minutes each.If you need to book a cleaning before the new year begins, give our office a call at (804) 794-4588.
