Emergency Dental Care Q&A with Dr. Tad Mosher

When a dental emergency happens, every minute counts. Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a broken crown, or a knocked-out tooth, knowing what to do and who to call can make all the difference. At Midlothian Dental Center’s Alverser Plaza location, Dr. Tad Mosher and his team are here to provide fast, compassionate care when you need it most.

We sat down with Dr. Mosher to answer some of the most common questions patients in the Richmond and Midlothian area ask about dental emergencies.

Q: What counts as a true dental emergency?

Dr. Mosher:
A dental emergency is anything that involves sudden pain, trauma, swelling, or bleeding that can’t wait until your next scheduled visit. Common examples are severe toothaches, pain near or around your tooth, infections, knocked-out teeth, broken or chipped teeth, lost or broken crowns or fillings, and injuries from sports or accidents. If you’re unsure, call us we’ll help you decide if you need immediate care.

Q: What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

Dr. Mosher:
Time is critical. First, try to gently place the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, keep it moist in a container of milk or in your mouth between your cheek and gums. Call our office right away, we have same-day emergency appointments, and the sooner we see you, the better chance we have of saving your tooth.

Q: How can I manage severe tooth pain at home before I get to the dentist?

Dr. Mosher:
If you’re in pain, over-the-counter pain relievers can help temporarily. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gums, that can cause burns. Cold compresses can also help reduce swelling. But remember, these are short-term solutions. Tooth pain is usually a sign of infection or another serious issue that needs professional care.

Q: Are dental emergencies common in kids?

Dr. Mosher:
Yes, especially with sports and active play. We see a lot of chipped teeth, knocked-out baby teeth, or injuries from falls. Parents should call us immediately if their child experiences dental trauma. We will walk you through the steps to take before you arrive for your appointment.

Q: What if my crown or filling comes out?

Dr. Mosher:
It may not feel as urgent as a broken tooth, but it still needs attention. Without the crown or filling, your tooth is more vulnerable to decay and damage. Keep the crown if you still have it and bring it to your appointment. In the meantime, avoid chewing on that side.

Q: Can you treat emergencies the same day?

Dr. Mosher:
Absolutely. At Midlothian Dental Center, we set aside time every day for emergencies. If you call us with a serious issue, we’ll do everything we can to see you the same day. Our goal is to relieve your pain, stabilize the problem, and protect your long-term oral health.

Q: How do I know if I should go to the ER instead of the dentist?

Dr. Mosher:
If you have uncontrolled bleeding, a broken jaw, or swelling that affects your ability to breathe, you should go to the emergency room first. For most other dental issues; pain, infection, broken or chipped tooth, the dentist is the best place to start.

Q: Does Midlothian Dental Center accept insurance for emergency visits?

Dr. Mosher:
Yes, we accept most dental insurance plans and will help you file claims so you can focus on feeling better. For patients without insurance, we’ll go over treatment options and costs upfront so there are no surprises.  We also offer an in-office savings plan and work with CareCredit. We are here to make it as stress free as possible so you can feel better quickly.
